Mended Hearts is a national volunteer heart support organization. We have 260 chapters throughout the United States and 2 chapters in Canada. Chapter 9, in the Greater Hartford area, is at present the only one in Connecticut. Nationally there are over 26,000 members.

If you are anticipating or recovering from open heart surgery, a cardiac procedure, or if you have heart disease, then becoming a Mended Hearts member is the best thing you can do for yourself.

Our Greater Hartford Chapter 9 provides cardiac support in three ways:

• First and foremost we have a hospital visiting program. We make both pre-op and post-op visits to open heart surgery patients and their families at Hartford Hospital, St. Francis Hospital, and the UConn Medical Center.

• Second, we have monthly meetings from September through May, except December. Our meetings feature speakers who keep you up to date on heart and health advances. The meetings, held in a relaxing atmosphere with refreshments, also allow you to meet and talk to others who have faced the challenge of heart surgery or a cardiac event and survived to live a full and healthy life. • Third, we have a special pre-retirement age support group that meets separately each month. This group is composed of people who have experienced heart problems and are in the work force. A nurse practitioner is the moderator for these sessions.
